A Definition of Relativism
Definition: Relativism
Domain: Epistemology, ethics
Context: Basis for beliefs, basis for values
'Relativism' in general is the view that all truth is localized to the individual, and to the social context within which s/he finds herself or himself . It is therefore the view that beliefs in general are lacking in any sort of objective standards.
Relativists, individuals who advance this argument, typically regard themselves and their own views, especially their arguments on behalf of relativism, as being exempt from relativism.
'Moral relativism' is a variant of this more general sort of relativism, and asserts that human values are necessarily lacking in objective justification of any kind.
Like the more general sort of relativists, the moral relativist would typically be affronted if someone was to act unethically toward them.
As of the publication of Brand Blanshard's "Reason and Goodness" moral relativism stands comprehensively refuted.
